GAMEPLAN
FOR WINNING AT LIFE
Our goal in this course is quite simple
We will work to identify, craft and execute athletes’ personal gameplan for success.
THIS COURSE
IS HIGHLY COLLABORATIVE
Freshmen athletes at the University of Texas are exposed to an award winning course - “Gameplan for Winning at Life” - when they land on the 40 Acres. This class is a research-driven deep dive into key personal development skills. The curriculum, developed by Daron K. Roberts, explores vulnerability, empathy, implicit bias, resilience, grit, failure management, effective communication, servant leadership and financial literacy. What makes this class unique is its designation as a “signature course” - the highest class distinction at the University. This class is taught three times a year, and each class consists of approximately 100 students (half of the participants are non-athletes).

THE ISLANDS
There will be three islands to which we will travel on our journey. First, we will set foot on Connection. Connection is the training ground for introspection. From there we will push off to the land of Resilience. All of the artifacts and weapons collected from Connection will be useful in our exploration of Resilience. Some of you believe that you have been to this place. Perhaps, this is true. I can assure you, however, that the place we visit will look very different from what you have seen. Finally, we will set sail for Influence. Some of you believe that you have been to this place. Perhaps, this is true. I can assure you, however, that the place we visit will look very different from what you have seen.
STUDENT WELLNESS
This course takes part in UT Austin’s SHIFT initiative and incorporates protective factors to promote student wellness and mitigate the risks associated with drug and alcohol misuse, including adverse academic outcomes.
